Le Tréport
The seaside resort of Le Tréport is a little corner of paradise just 2h30 from Paris.
An ideal destination for a weekend or a holiday and to recharge personnal batteries on the Normandy coast. Walks, visits or even discovery of the heritage: in Tréport there is something for everyone!
Le Tréport took off and became a tourist town in the 19th century with the fashion for sea bathing under the reign of Louis Philippe. Over the years, villas were built by the Parisian bourgeoisie before being destroyed during the Second World War. The city also has an important religious heritage with the Saint-Jacques church, built at the end of the 16th century and the old Saint-Michel abbey, built in 1036 by Count Robert 1st. Over the centuries, Le Tréport experienced significant growth with the creation of the canal, the dykes and the port. In front of the port, Vauban had an artillery battery built in 1695. A century later, the defense of the port was increased by two cannons and a mortar. Today, the port is still used by fishermen but also for trade: every year tons of goods are unloaded.
After taking a short tour on the port side, stroll through the city center, then head for the funicular, which will take you to the heights of Tréport. This funicular was built in 1906 and is 120 meters long. After the Second World War, the funicular was not put back into service. It was only in 2005 that the project was relaunched. Today, lifts shuttle between the beach and the top of the cliffs. In the past, the shuttle made it possible to reach the Grand Hôtel du Trianon and the Calvaire des Terrasses. The Trianon, a large and magnificent luxury hotel was built on the heights in 1913 and had 300 rooms. Eventually this hotel was transformed into a British military hospital during the First World War. In 1942 the German army dynamited it. Today, only the remains of the first terrace remain.
After visiting these remains, I advise you to go for a walk along the coast, on the coastal path. This 26km GR21 will take you to Dieppe and make you discover magnificent landscapes! Finally, we note that Le Tréport was the place of inspiration for several artists: Victor Hugo and Jules Noël, a 19th century painter.
Practical advice: the funicular is open from Sunday to Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 p.m., Saturday and the day before public holidays from 7:45 a.m. to 12:40 a.m.
Le Tréport – Mers-les-Bains SNCF train station is a 12-minute walk away.
